Alive At Art - Saturday 6th July - Review

Alive At Art

Hull - Pearson Park - Saturday 6th July

Alive At Art Hull's 'one day' Arts Festival turned out to be such a fantastic day.

I first heard about this on Friday night through chance and fortunately enough  I changed my plans for my Saturday afternoon from going to Beverly Races to attending this brilliant, free, local event. It was a fun filled day of great food, weather, music, company and the general all round awesome vibe projected by the artists and attendees.

The community spirit really did feel alive within this get together of people from various artistic genres. The mix of poets, stand up comedians, musicians as well as aspiring and established artists really did cater for many peoples tastes and proved how successful local attractions like this can and will boost cultural & creative awareness along with community spirit.

The day provided many great moments, from seeing a friend Martin I particularly enjoyed the drop in nature of the 'live art' sessions being held throughout the day at one of the dedicated art tents - Artists and passers by got involved by becoming a muse for the surrounding artists to practising honing their skills.

After plodding around the surroundings of all what was on display me and a few friends plonked ourselves down next to a near by tree - Shade became undoubtedly essential - Rookie mistake on my part for not bringing suncream or a hat.
We listened to some assortments of music coming from the main stage whilst we relaxed and socialised with each other and surrounding groups of people.

As a nice little touch I ended up drawing about 20 quick sketches and personally handing them out to unsuspecting festival folk enjoying their day. So, if you were one of those people who happened to say yes to a free hand drawn sketch then I hope you liked it and thankfully the marketing material on the back worked it's wondrous magic as I'm sure you wouldn't be visiting this growing blog through course of chance.

I really had to emphasise on the backs of each image that it really was "just a sketch" and the whole point of it was to do something a little out of the ordinary in terms of marketing which was free, fun and embodied interactivity and community spirit.
After all, thats essentially what the Cultcha Lounge is about and it is slowly being talked about now by local creative talent.
Hopefully by the time we come to our launch night and we open our doors to the public, likeminded local artists and art enthusiasts will have more and more of a chance of knowing about us and how we want to help local artists gain more exposure.

So after a successful Alive At Art 2013 what can we hope for 2014?

I think it needs to be marketed better to the good people of Hull and potentially choosing a day in the year which also doesn't play host to 2 alternative festival/gathering would bode well in attracting more people to the venue.
Better toilet facilities would be widely appreciated I'm sure as their just wasn't enough and the running water within the toilets was only present during 50% of my visits (I needed to keep hydrated so I ended up their a few more times then normal - to much info? lol, sorry)
Also more attractions and play area's for the kids, possibly some rides for some of the more adrenaline seekers of the crowd.
Finally I was quite surprised to have gone the full day not seen people juggling, doing poi or any other circus related visual art (if there were then I just was't in the right place at the right time) but my suggestion is probably to pay for a small selection of people to wander around the full venue randomly displaying circus related activities, or, even a circus workshop for kids and adults to come together and boost interactivity and group participation.
Just a suggestion

Lets hope that next years event enjoys a great turnout and the same amazing UK weather.

If you want to learn more about what was on offer here is a link to an on-line article published Saturday  30th June on This Is Hull And East Riding.

Thanks for reading and stay lucky - Leon
